Unit 2 Engaging with an audience
task 1
(1A) from Monday 6th (November) till Friday 15th (December)
(1B) there is a lot to look back o when it comes to my auditions for peter pan. there are a few reason why i chose to audition for hook. my first reason is that i thought it was the best role for me to go for. because I'm 6,5 tall. i am way too tall to play peter pan and i was doing peter pan before lockdown and I was playing smee but covid stop it. secondly i wanted to push myself by trying to make a completely originally hook. making him crazy but he trying to hide it. and that he think the world goes around him. how i prepared for my audition was i look over hooks in film and stage adaptations of peter an and i chose Hook from the hook film made in 1991. his laughs really captivating and the way he acted i took a lot of inspiration off him for my hook. i practised for my auditions by the monolog we where given for hooks was separated into 3 different parts. so i show pride ,sadness and anger in that order for my audition breaking the 4th wall to the audiences creating this funny way of hook try to get the audience to love him. now i think my audition went really really well. i played off all my comedic timing perfectly and my voice and acting was on point that was the main positive. however if i could do the performance one more time i would only change a little thing with the anger that being i start of trying to say that kids love me but realise that they love peter pan and be more anger if i could.
task 2
there where 3 different cast of peter pan so I played 3 different people. lets start with cast one which is the performance's I played captain Hook. now there was a lot of research i did to become hook even looking at the original book that was wrote and see how the author wrote it. i found out that hook was brutal killer who killed natives and lost boys that they found. also finding out that everyone of his crew is scared of him. and finally his final words was "floreat etona". now with this i portrayed hook a little differently then i first image myself did. from my research i was going to make my hook being mean and horrible ( living up to his expectation and reputation as a pirate ) but also be a little upper class and sobbing by thinking he was better then everyone. to finish it off i also made him a little crazy as well for his desire for live and affection of the children when they read the book peter pan. now from start to finish when hook first come in from the audience way he very cocky and confident and telling Starkey ( her character is trying to get rid of the Hook so she can become captain.) but let the lost boy go by saying ( I but put back that pistol first ) he confident in him self that he will catch all the lost boys at one point and they can not run away forever. however compared to his last line where the lost boys has him surround around him and just before him and peter have there final battle. even thought he had complete lost he still believes that he can kill peter pan and sail the ship away. hes says " proud and insolent youth prepare to meet thy doom" after that he is defeat and fed to the crocodile but before doing so he try to cheat by try to strike pan 1 last time being the fatal move before being push into the crocodile mouth. for staging i made sure i was centre of every group or of the stage i could possibly be because i wanted to reflect that i was the boss not Starkey or smee Hook was the start of the show. i did this by in songs or in scene i made sure i had centre of stage and attention because again its what hook desire for. so for my vocals and body i start for having i straight up back with high chest up being proud and strong for the captain that i am and for vocals i had a strong and mainly low voice with both acting and sings so in the moment like when the crocodile come on i can rise it a little hight for them moments. Kelly direction with the character was he need to be a bit bipolar so i made him by making him happy to sad and wanting poeple to love him then too hating peter pan and wanting him dead which then goes round in circles my next character from cast 2 was bill jukes. when i did research into him i found out from the Disney cartoon from 1951 and from the script that he is a tattooed large man who is supposed to be scary most biggest man on the ship. i portrayed him like that on the stage stage for my first line being a " yo ho yo ho a pirates life for me" when coming thought the audience to get on stage i got in people face and walk with a strong man build with confidents i could knock out anyone in a fight type of way. my stage present was some what ordering around and being a pull but no so the captain could see as that was the man i was afraid of on the ship. then in the final scene that i play juke in before my death me saying " yes captain " in a jolly mood because my character think that peter pan is dead because of hook saying he is and that the lost boys are about to be killed at last. my staging was having a large present about so i move as one i would not be fixable or anything like that he moves as one. for my vocal and body language i went with a more low and scruffy sounding voice and body language was big strong man type one. Kelly adive for the bill jukes to be as most still emotion as possible for when u die have a girly scream for dramatic effect. so i took that on bored and made it apart if my role. now finally for cast 3 i was a normal pirate and one without a speaking part. so Kelly told us to create a character for yourself so i went with a more stupid pirate. so i would do stuff like hold my sword the wrong way round and got my hand in the massive chest in rich damp cake. my interaction thought ( instead on first and last lines as i hand non) the show was funny because i tried to always agree with everyone and when Starkey was about to be through into the cabin and die i says " i think she did ".
Task 3
Over the 3 days and 6 show that we did for peter pan. we had 3 different type pf audience to interacted with. lest start with audience number one which is public. for this performances I played captain hook on the VIP night. so we did no change at all for this performance because it was the public show we could go all out with it. so when i was coming down the stair as hook i could give people dirty looks and be the fullest version if myself that i created for my character. what i learnt from the audience is that there all loved the villain of the show. and for me to be a good villain i need to command the stage. what i mean by this is i cant just go onto the stage and just say my lines in character i need to fully believe that i am hook and that im the most feared pirate among the 7 seas. i think moving forward with this type of audience to Appel them again in the future is to host more shows so its more likely they tell friends and family to come see this show but from an actors view is that no matter what role i am next year i need to believe i am it. now let move on too our next audiences which being our relaxes performances. there wear lots of changes we had to do for the relax performances. from a tech side of this we dimmed the lights so we had them on a less percent. so it would not be to bright and overwhelming. we also had to make the volume of the speakers lower because the volume may be a little to much for them and could overwhelming. and for seating the school just booked a place and they could sit where ever they wanted too but we did have to make sure that the group that needed wheelchair actability had reserved seating. from an actors side of view we had to be first of all jolly pirates and not mean and scary. and we had to sing with more elegant and not so much shouty. we also had a little chat with everyone went around introducing my character and my myself. the final thing we did was we showed the crowed the crocodile and the shadow and to finish it off we said they could do whatever they needed to make themself feel at home as possible. what i learnt from the performances is that this community of people need to be more opened as possible as to see theatre in local area as its only down in the west end that they do relax performances and panto sometime do it ad not all. but its give good eperices with the actor and its good for CV and most importantly its to make dreams for these kid who probably never went to a theatres before and that is just magical. the way i move forward with this is one simple way and that is doing more shows days like this instead of one to keep it all inclusive. the last type of audience we had was primary school. what we had to change was only one small thing when it came to acting and that was to not get into there faces. the one thing i left with this was defiantly the how exited the kids are for show like peter pan. where there at the point of screaming whenever hook ever came on stage. and so on and on. if i could do anything next time to bring more is make it more interactive.
task 4
now for my complete evaluation of my performances of Hook. let relook at my goals for my character. my goals for hook was to portray him in a over confident but crazy at the same time to but it at best. he thinks that he is untouchable and never can be defeated but doubt himself all the time. the impact i wanted to make to the audience is at first to be this well know feared pirate of the seven seas but for then the audience to guess that he is just so overconfident he cant get anything done. I think i hit all of these objectives pretty. but we elevate a little more before we do our final round up. lets start at my emotional engagement, i think my emotional engagement went really well because there was mainly 3 different emotion i showed happy ,sadness and frustration/anger. the audience could tell very clearly what my emotion was at the time and when i change from back and forward for comedic effect they laugh straight through it. there was no moment where i don't think for my character hook emotion could not be told. lets have a look at my vocals through the show, i think as a whole my singing voice was good. i think i really did well at songs like i have a funny feeling where i hit the notes perfectly and used my emotion's really well thought the song. and i did really well with rich damp cake. however there was one song i could of done better on and that was goodbye peter pan as my vocals where okay and good but the words where hard to learn as they are so repeative and nearly the same so that was a problem. now same with vocals but not singing my voice was great i had a really different voice then my normal one and it sounded complete like hook which was good and by far the best part of my voice was my laugh as hook. now let review my movement and my physicality for hook. i think my posture for hook was portrayed very well as i had a very strong one showing my authority. for my movement / blocking i try to always be the start if the show at the centre leading the scene as much as i can which worked perfectly i thought with my character. Now looking at my involvement with the dynamic of an company i think it was really good because the pirates are not as smart as hook and hook is happy about that but he wish they were a little bit for smarter which created a great comedic effect and i loved working with all the pirates. also looking at costume and props my costume was amazing with my red jacket and wig and hair plus the hat it really made me look like hook and with my make up as well it really made me look evil. props where SUPER important to my character as i needed my hook and my sword to fight peter. i used all of these very well through the show using what i can when ever i can. and lastly my artistic choses. i think for my hook i really inspired of the 1991 hook film as i think that hook was the best adaptation there is. with the script as well i could see hook want to finish his deal with peter pan and live the rest of his life as a normal pirate and sail once's again to find treasure but cant as in the script hook says how he wont leave never land until he kills peter pan. I personally think that my strengns through out this performace are. i think there where my present and the way i acted for hook and my body language expression with hook. i think my best moment was Hook and peters final battle which was my favourite part of the show. my areas of improve would be my vocals in singing. as a whole a had a great singing voice but it was goodbye peter pan that i found hard to sing and to remember some of the songs words. moving forward now the gaol that i want to sent my self is too get better at singing by finding a singing teacher and making my singing way way better. but for now with acting it try to first of all get rid of hook laugh and second of all if i need to play a villain again to do it completely different then hook but i aim to be more the hearo if possible.
some feedback from my peers.
will said " i did an incredible jon with working with the cast and staying in role. he knew all the choreography and hit every single note to the song.
my action plan
my action plan for now is to make sure that first of all every character i play is complete different from the last and to make sure every role i chose to go for is some what challing for me. maybe they have hard scene or they have a hard song
